The opposition St Lucia Labour Party has praised a local lawyer for challenging the inactions of the Allen Chastanet administration. He has taken before the courts for review ,the non-appointment of a deputy speaker for the St Lucia House of Assembly. The post has been vacant for a little over two years to facilitate the holder of the office joining the island`s cabinet of ministers , as Minister in the office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for External Affairs.
On Thursday October 25th, 2018 Justice Godfrey Smith ruled that trial based on a constitutional motion filed Mr. Martinus Francois will begin on February 13, 2019. In July 2016, Castries Central MP Sarah Flood-Beaubrun was elected Deputy Speaker of the House House of Assembly. She resigned two weeks later to run the External Affairs Ministry. for failing to appoint a deputy speaker.
Any of the island`s elected MPs ,who is not a member of cabinet ,can serve in the position.
