Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has announced plans to relocate containers at Port Castries to a Cul De Sac location.
The relocation of the containers will make way for Port Castries to facilitate more cruise ships and to make St. Lucia a ‘Home Port Destination.”
The announcement by the Prime Minister comes days after tourism officials announced record breaking visitor arrivals for 2018, with the majority being cruise ship arrivals.
Cruise visits were up by 13.6% while stay over arrivals increased by 2.2%
This will be at a cost of US 70 million dollars if the government decides to undertake the project.
In 2018, the government expanded the berth at Pointe Seraphine to accommodate mega cruise ships which is expected to help St. Lucia elevate its position in the regional cruise tourism arena.
The Prime Minister also highlighted plans by his administration to construct a major cruise ship port in the south of the island.
Over 1.2 million visitors arrived here in 2018, the highest number ever recorded in St. Lucia’s history.
