NHC CHAIRMAN SAYS PLANS FOR LA CLERY CDC SITE PROGRESSING

Chairman of the National Housing Corporation Timothy Mangal says plans for the redevelopment of the site left vacant by the demolition of the La Clery CDC apartments are progressing.
The apartment buildings were demolished last year after a long battle with occupants.

The demolition of the buildings was a highly controversial with several occupants of the buildings refusing to move unless they got better deals to relocate.
This was despite the dilapidated structures being rules unfit for human habitation.
The site has been earmarked for a commercial and housing development. A date is yet to be given for the commencement of work
The NHC Chairman says the project is currently in the preliminary design and consultancy phase.
Mr Mangal says the development is an important one which is expected to boost the image of the stigmatized community.
At this moment a timeline cannot be given for the commencement of the physical work as there are several agencies involved in the project.
According to Mr Mangal, the intention is to work with and empower the community residents.
