Opposition leader Philip Pierre says based on his experience in the political arena; he is in a better position to be prime Minister than any of his predecessors were.
Mr. Pierre has been the parliamentary representative for Castries East for the last 22 years and held several ministerial positions in addition to serving as deputy Prime Minister.
Mr. Philip Pierre was appointed as a senator in 1992 but it was in 1997 that he entered active politics. He is the longest serving MP and is considered a veteran politician by many.
From 1997 to 2000, the Castries East MP was Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and International Financial Services.
He served as Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister between 2001 and 2006 and then Minister for Infrastructure, Ports Services and Transport between 2011 and 2016.
While he has serveed several times in the position of Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Pierre believes having worked in various ministerial positions he is in a better position to serve as St. Lucia’s prime Minister than his predecessors were.
These include the likes of Sir Allen Louisy, Sir John Compton, Sir Vaughn Lewis, Stephenson King and yes…former SLP Leader Dr. Kenny Anthony and Prime Minister Allen Chastanet.
According to Mr Pierre, becoming Prime Minister would be the highlight of his political career.
Pierre became Leader of the Opposition following the SLP’s loss at the 2016 general election. He took over from Dr. Kenny Anthony who served as leader for several years.
Mr Pierre was confirmed leader of the Saint Lucia Labour Party on 18 June 2016.
