The OECS Bar Association is applauding strides made by St. Lucian lawyers regionally and internationally.
The commendation from President Thaddeus Antoine comes days after St. Lucia criminal lawyer Shawn Innocent was appointed as an acting High Court Judge in Anguilla.
Mr Shawn Innocent was sworn in on January 21st to serve in the Anguilla Circuit of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, following the retirement and departure of Justice Fellow St. Lucian Cheryl Mathurin.
He has been described as a fierce advocate and was seen as an exceptional magistrate and a great criminal lawyer.
St. Lucia has produced several lawyers who have been called to practice and serve in other jurisdictions in the region and as far as Africa.
Among them former Director of Public Prosecutions Victoria Charles Clarke, Vickie Ellis, Raulston Glasgow, Ermaine Moise, Georges Taylor Alexander, Kimberly Cenac Phulgence, Agnes Actie and Kadie Albertine to name a few.
Lawyers are most times outsourced for huge high profile cases…usually by politicians.
According to Mr Antoine, that does not mean that St. Lucian lawyers are not competent enough.
Judge Innocent who served as Magistrate in the British Virgin Islands will now be acting as High Court Judge until July 2019
