FORMER MINISTER AGAINST NAMING PLACES AFTER POLITICIANS

A former government minister has taken issue with public spaces and institutions being renamed after politicians.

Peter Josie’s comments follow the recent renaming of Serenity Park to the Sir George William Mallet Serenity Park. He says there are other persons who have made significant contributions to the development of Saint Lucia and who should be similarly honored Mr Peter Josie says how things are named in St. Lucia is extremely important and not only politicians should have their names attached to public spaces or institutions.

Similar sentiments were echoed last Wednesday by Castries Mayor Peterson Francis when Serenity Park was renamed after former Castries Central MP Sir George Mallet.

The renaming of the park has been opposed by some including the opposition St. Labour Party and former Castries Central MP Richard Fredrick who was responsible for the park’s construction.

Speculation is rife that Richard Fredrick is hoping to contest the Central Castries seat at the next general election and if successful, that he will reverse the name change.
