SANDALS AND HANDS ACROSS THE SEA LEND A HAND TO IMPROVE LITERACY AT SCHOOLS

To help stem the tide of literacy problems among local students the Hands Across the Sea, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising the literacy levels of children in the Eastern Caribbean and the Sandals foundation donated four remedial reading kits to the Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School. The donation comes at a time when literacy is one of the major challenges confronting educators at the primary school level.

The donation by the Hands Across The Sea organization and the Sandals Foundation comes at a time when secondary school students continue to struggle with literacy issues. On Wednesday the two organizations  donated four remedial reading kits to the Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School

The  kits will assist teachers at the School with the monumental  task of helping  students improve their  reading skills. Literacy  goes well beyond  the ability to read. It encompasses the ability to put ideas together using words in the right context –  something which many students encounter difficulty with

The Sandals Foundation  has been focusing its efforts on assisting primary school  children

Wednesday’s handing over ceremony took place at the Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School
