Economic Development Minister Guy Joseph says he cannot verify the origin of a letter being circulated on the social media which reportedly came from his Ministry and allegedly bearing his signature. According to the opposition St. Lucia Labour Party the letter makes reference to an EC 167.4 million contractual agreement with a firm for street lighting and work on the St. Jude hospital
According to Opposition Leader Philip J Pierre the street lighting and St. Jude projects referred to in the letter have not received Parliamentary approval. Mr. Pierre added that Mr. Joseph is not the Finance Minister and therefore has no authority to commit St. Lucia to the EC 167.4 million dollar amount referenced in the letter . At Thursday’s SLP Press Conference the Political Leader called on Prime Minister Allen Chastanet or the Economic Development Minister to clear the air, giving them seven days within which to do so.
Mr. Guy Joseph has responded calling the situation humorous and stating that Government letters are not allowed to be circulated on the internet. He says he cannot verify the origin of the letter. Mr. Joseph explained that projects must receive Development Control Authority approval and must go before Parliament if a sovereign guarantee is required
Mr. Joseph has dismissed this latest development as a ploy to undermine his credibility
