CASE MADE FOR MORE INVESTMENT IN YOUTH IN BUDGET

Gros Islet MP and Equity, Social Justice, Local Government and Empowerment Minister Lenard Montoute believes that a massive 1.7 million dollar increase In this year’s  budget allocation for youth empowerment programs should put a major dent in youth crime. Last year the allocation was only 376 thousand dollars.

Last year the budget allocation for programs that targeted the impoverished was over $ 758,000. Of that amount only $158,000 was spent. The unutilized funds  will be transferred to this year’s budget for the same purpose. Last year the home care for the elderly program received an allocation of $6,491,000.00 This year the figure has bene increased to $7,691,000.00. Youth empowerment programs received a massive increase of 1.7 million dollars. Last year the allocation was only 376 thousand dollars in comparison to this year’s $2,455, 600.00. Gros Islet MP and Equity, Social Justice, Local Government and Empowerment Minister Lenard Montoute is hoping that the increase will help finance programs that see a major reduction in youth crime

Castries South MP Dr. Ernest Hilaire complained about the lack of financial resources  in the estimates to benefit  the constituency. He called for the construction of more sporting facilities to facilitate sports development

Dr.  Hilaire says the 300 thousand dollars could have been spent on purchasing sporting equipment
