A 54 year old man is dead after being crushed by a shipping container at the Castries Sea Port on Thursday.
The Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) issued a press release following the incident stating that Wilson Joseph was employed by Winfresh to load bananas but according to WINFRESH CEO, Bernard Cornibert, while Joseph was indeed loading banana containers he was an employee of SLASPA.
According to a press release from SLASPA, the incident occurred around 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 11. It said operations at the Port were immediately suspended to ensure the safety of other port users.
The circumstances surrounding the tragic incident were not stated, but SLASPA noted that the 54 year old was taken to the Victoria Hospital via ambulance where he succumbed to his injuries.
Infrastructure and Ports Minister Stephenson King, before making his budget presentation alerted his colleagues of the situation.
While SLAPSPA’s press release stated that Joseph, was employed by Winfresh, officials from WINFRESH say otherwise.
After the Ports Minster extended condolences to the family on behalf of the government of Saint Lucia, he then begged of the lower house to observe a moment of silence.
This is the first time in SLASPA’s 36-year history that such an incident has occurred at the port.
The matter is under investigation by police.
