The Government of Saint Lucia, through the Youth and Sports Ministry is looking into the role of sports in tackling crime.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development underlines the growing contribution of sports as a tool for peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect.

According to officials at the Youth Development Ministry, the government plans to use a variety of sporting disciplines including basketball, boxing and cycling to engage young people in hard to reach areas.

The plan is to increase investment in sport and physical activity along with sporting infrastructure in hot spot areas.

This week, at least three young men were arrested and charged with two recent homicides.

Youth involvement in crime, according to the minister is not exclusive to St. Lucia; however he says it is a major concern locally.

The winner of the Youth in Social Development award at the 2019 Youth Awards, Miss Anita Felix says not enough is being done for the island’s youth.

Earlier this year, CARICOM’s Secretary General said the issue of youth crime and violence is a regional problem that demands a regional solution.
