The St. Lucia Fire & Emergency Service is pushing for the department to be given authority to issue tickets and to take other punitive actions against delinquent drivers. The suggestion follows the circulation of a video in which a driver appears to deliberately obstruct a fire appliance on its way to an emergency.
Willfully obstructing an emergency vehicle can prevent them from reaching a life-threatening situation yet the Department says it continues to deal with such impediments in one form or another including blocked fire hydrants
According to Mr Williams, individuals guilty of such practices don’t seem to understand the implications of their actions until they or their loved ones become victims.
He believes fire officers should have the authority to ticket the guilty individuals.
The department says it will be working closely with the Royal St. Lucia Police and the Department of Transport to come up with a solution to the problem
