The ambitious “25 by 2025” initiative, aimed at cutting the region’s massive food import bill by 25% this year, has now been extended to 2030. CARICOM’s Lead Head on Agriculture, Guyanese President Dr. Irfaan Ali, says the decision comes as the region battles global trade uncertainties, climate challenges, and rising costs—including the impact of the U.S. bird flu outbreak on food prices. Dr. Ali highlights key investments in food production and infrastructure but stresses the need for a stronger strategy to withstand future shocks.
