The President of the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association has proposed a solution to the Cuban doctor issue facing the government of Saint Lucia.
The administration of Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre is under pressure following a request from the United States, whose leadership under Donald Trump has urged Saint Lucia and other regional and Latin American nations benefiting from the Cuban Medical Brigade to sever payment arrangements with Cuba.
Washington argues that the current model—where payments are made through the Cuban government—could involve labor exploitation. In response, the local medical association is recommending that Saint Lucia pursue direct contractual arrangements with the Cuban health workers.
