St. Lucian-born UNICEF Champion for Children, His Excellency Taj Weekes, has issued a strong response to the recent statement by Metropolitan Archbishop Gabriel Malzaire regarding hair standards in schools.
Weekes opposes the Catholic Church’s position, calling it a “modern colonial chain” in the education system. While acknowledging the need for discipline and rules, he argues that shaming a child’s appearance because of their hair is a form of black suppression. He hopes that all stakeholders will stand against what he calls outdated and oppressive measures in today’s era.
